Why Choose Us
Pedigree
Tim Willmot (the proprietor) has been a member of the Mountain Club of South Africa for approximately twenty-five years and in that period has had extensive mountain experience including first ascents of more than three hundred new rock routes in South Africa.
Tim has served on the committee of the Johannesburg section of the MCSA and, at that time, was responsible for establishing a rock climbing training portfolio for the club. The course was designed and successfully implemented by Tim. The portfolio survives to this day.
Tim is still active in the mountains both on rock and at altitude.
All tour guides employed by African Mountain Adventures are extensively trained and qualified before being accredited by THETA.
All inclusive value
There are no hidden costs or fees. African Mountain Adventures will meet you at the international airport, transport you to and from the expedition location, feed you, provide an accredited tour guide and provide a fantastic mountain adventure inclusive of training where required. We do not provide alcoholic beverages or en route soft drinks or en route restaurant meals.
Rate of exchange considerations
Whilst the South African Rand is relatively weak against first world international currencies, South Africa is not a cheap destination for the international tourist in terms of hotel accommodation, restaurant prices and the like. Fortunately African Mountain Adventures avoids the use of hotel accommodation by camping and we cook our own food.
Sunny weather
South Africa has an abundance of sunny weather. It is seldom that one is caught out by poor weather. The Western Cape has a Mediterranean type climate with its rainfall during the winter months whereas the rest of the country has a summer rainfall pattern with its rain mainly in the form of afternoon thundershowers. During the winter months the high mountains have snow and the odd iced up waterfall.
Flexibility
By virtue of the way in which African Mountain Adventures is structured extreme flexibility is a trademark. Should you be on an expedition and weather proves to be a problem the tour guide will very quickly come up with an alternative activity or venue. Should a scheduled expedition not suit you in terms of its timing or structure then all you have to do is say so and African Mountain Adventures will try and accommodate you.
Lack of crowds
Compared to the mountainous areas of the first world there are huge areas that are totally unexplored from a climbing viewpoint. The potential for establishing a new route is thus large. By the same token the mountaineering fraternity in South Africa is relatively small so you are assured of a crowd free adventure.
Ecotourism
African Mountain Adventures supports responsible travel to mountainous areas that conserves the environment and improves the well being of the local people. This means that African Mountain Adventures subscribes to the following principles:
- Minimise impact.
- Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
- Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
- Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.
- Raise sensitivity to host countries political, environmental and social climate.
